Sublingual Immunotherapy for Aeroallergen Desensitization

Sublingual Immunotherapy for Aeroallergen Desensitization

Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)

Sublingual immunotherapy is an alternative form of disease-modifying treatment for allergic conditions. Like subcutaneous immunotherapy, it “re-educates” the immune system to develop tolerance and prevent excessive reactions to airborne allergens. Its use can lead to long-term remission or even complete resolution of the symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis, while also helping to prevent progression to allergic asthma.

  • What it is: A modern form of treatment using drops or dissolvable tablets placed under the tongue.
  • How it is administered: It is taken daily at home by the patient, according to an individualized treatment protocol prescribed by the allergist.
  • Main advantage: It offers convenience and flexibility in the patient’s daily routine, reducing the number of regular visits required at the medical practice.
  • Treatment phases: Treatment typically includes an initial phase of gradual dose escalation, followed by a maintenance phase.
  • Duration and Clinical Benefit: Treatment requires strict daily adherence over an extended period, with a typical duration of 3 to 5 years. Upon completion, it can achieve long-term modification of the natural course of the allergy, significantly reducing symptoms and the need for medication, while also helping to protect against the development of new allergic sensitizations and allergic asthma.
  • Individualized treatment: The decision to use SLIT is made on an individual basis, taking into account the patient’s specific allergen profile, history of symptoms, and lifestyle, with the aim of ensuring both safety and effectiveness.
