Hymenoptera Venom Immunotherapy (Desensitization)

Long-Term Protection and a Return to Safety

Venom immunotherapy (desensitization) is the only disease-modifying treatment for allergy to Hymenoptera venom (bee and wasp venom). Its aim is to train the immune system so that it no longer overreacts in the event of a future sting.

How the Treatment Works – Step by Step

  • Preliminary assessment: Before treatment begins, a detailed clinical and laboratory evaluation is carried out, including skin tests and measurement of venom-specific IgE antibodies, in order to accurately identify the responsible allergen.
  • The procedure: Treatment involves the subcutaneous administration of specially prepared, highly purified venom extracts. It begins with a build-up phase, during which the dose is gradually increased, followed by monthly maintenance injections (maintenance dose). The interval between maintenance doses may subsequently be gradually extended beyond one month.
  • Duration: To achieve long-term immunological tolerance, the total duration of treatment is usually 5 years. Depending on the patient’s medical history and frequency of exposure, lifelong treatment may be necessary in certain cases.

Benefits and Success Rates

  • High effectiveness: Data from international studies show success and protection rates of approximately 90–95% against a potentially severe allergic reaction following a future sting.
  • Freedom from the fear of allergic reactions: In addition to being particularly important for professionals who need to return safely to work—such as beekeepers, farmers, and gardeners—the treatment allows patients to once again enjoy outdoor activities and nature without the constant fear of a severe allergic reaction.
  • Treatment under medical supervision: Each maintenance dose is administered exclusively in the controlled environment of the medical practice, under the direct supervision of a specialist.

Are You a Candidate for Venom Immunotherapy?

This treatment is indicated for individuals who have experienced a systemic allergic reaction—such as dizziness, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or a generalized rash—following a bee or wasp sting.
