Spirometry

Spirometry

Spirometry is a quick, non-invasive, and completely safe test used to assess lung function. It accurately measures the volume of air a patient can inhale and exhale, as well as the speed at which air flows through the airways.

How does it help in the diagnosis and management of allergic asthma?

Allergic asthma is characterized by chronic inflammation of the airways and reversible airway narrowing triggered by exposure to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or animal dander. Spirometry is considered essential for the diagnosis and monitoring of allergic asthma because it:

  • Detects airway obstruction: It can identify impaired airflow at an early stage, even when the patient has no symptoms or only mild symptoms.
  • Assesses reversibility: Spirometry is repeated after the administration of a bronchodilator medication to measure changes in airflow and help confirm the diagnosis of asthma.
  • Helps monitor the condition: It shows how effectively the treatment is working, allowing the physician to adjust medication doses according to the patient’s individual needs.

Preparation for the test

To facilitate the examination and ensure accurate results, patients are advised to avoid heavy meals and smoking for at least 2 hours before the appointment. In addition, it may be necessary to temporarily discontinue certain inhaled medications, following specific instructions from the physician.
